What is TMD?

The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are the two joints connecting your lower jaw to your skull. They slide and rotate in front of each ear and are among the most complex joints in the body. When the mandible and the joints are not aligned nor synchronized in movement, you may develop TMD.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are disorders of the jaw muscles, temporomandibular joints, and nerves associated with chronic facial pain. Any problem that prevents the muscles, bones, and joints from working together may result in temporomandibular disorder.

While the actual cause of this disorder may not be clear, the leading cause is usually an excessive strain on the jaw joints and the muscle group that controls chewing, swallowing, and speech. Some other examples of what can cause TMD include:

  • Bruxism, which is the chronic, involuntary clenching or grinding of the teeth
  • Trauma to the jaw, the head, or the neck
  • Arthritis and displacement of the jaw joint disks
  • Other painful medical conditions, such as fibromyalgia or irritable bowel syndrome, may overlap with or worsen the pain of TMD

When you have TMJ disorder (TMD), you may experience the following:

  • Sore cheeks and jaw
  • Facial swelling
  • Pain around your neck and ears
  • Clicking noise in your jaw when you open and close your mouth
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Ringing in your ears
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • A shocking sensation on your face
  • Teeth clenching or grinding

BOTOX for TMJ Disorders (TMD)

BOTOX, a neuromodulating protein, may help treat symptoms of TMJ disorders by reducing facial muscle activity. You may benefit most from this treatment if other methods haven’t relieved the following TMJ disorder symptoms:

  • Jaw tension
  • Headaches due to teeth grinding
  • Lockjaw in cases of severe stress

It’s generally recommended as a complementary treatment to other TMJ disorder therapy, but on its own, it may be effective in treating TMD for some people. BOTOX can relieve TMJ disorder symptoms for up to three months.

The non-surgical, outpatient treatment typically takes 10-30 minutes. After applying a numbing cream, Dr. Ataii will inject BOTOX into your forehead, temple, and jaw muscles. Afterward, you can resume your routine; BOTOX for TMD has no downtime. Some patients experience relief within a day or two of treatment, while others notice improvement after several days.

Masseter BOTOX

Because BOTOX is an injectable muscle relaxer, Dr. Ataii can use it in the masseter muscles to change your face shape and manage facial pain.

The masseter muscle is located on the side of your face and connects your cheekbone to your lower jawbone, helping you chew. When Botox is injected into the masseter, it temporarily blocks nerve signals, so the muscle cannot move.

Masseter BOTOX can:

  • Manage teeth grinding
  • Reduce jaw tension, pain, and clenching
  • Relieve headaches
  • Contour a square jaw
  • Create a balanced face shape
  • Reduce ear pain

Like BOTOX for TMJ disorders, BOTOX is injected into the selected muscles after applying numbing cream. The procedure typically lasts 15 minutes, and you can return to your usual activities. While you can expect to see full results in about one week, some people experience relief from their symptoms in one to three days. These results should last up to four months before repeating the procedure becomes necessary.

BOTOX for TMJ Disorders, Jawline Slimming, and Contouring

When your jaw muscles are tensed and overworked, it may:

  • Cause your face to look wider
  • Give the face a square shape
  • Cause premature neck wrinkles
  • Create a disproportionate face shape

The weakening effect of BOTOX reduces the appearance of your jaw muscles and simultaneously alleviates pain from clenching. BOTOX can even help define the cheekbones as the jaw muscles soften and make the bones of the face look more pronounced and sculpted. This creates a slimmer V-shaped jawline, restoring youthfulness while retraining muscles to stop grinding when injected a few times a year consistently.

Am I a good candidate for BOTOX for TMJ?

BOTOX is safe for most people who experience jaw tension or have a TMJ disorder. During your initial consultation, we will carefully review your medical history before beginning treatment. You’ll inform us of any medications you take and any allergies.

However, you should avoid this treatment if you:

  • Are pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding
  • Are allergic to dairy protein
  • Have a neuromuscular disorder
  • Are prone to keloid scarring

Are There Any Risks or Side Effects of BOTOX for TMJ Disorders?

While BOTOX is generally considered safe, potential side effects include:

  • Pain or swelling at the site of injection
  • Bruising
  • Headache
  • Flu-like symptoms
