What is Kybella?

FDA approved since 2015, Kybella is an injectable, non-surgical treatment to remove stubborn fat under the chin or on the neck, or pre-jowl sagging without having to undergo surgery. Made of a safe and effective version of deoxycholic acid, Kybella can deliver the desired outcome in as little as 2-4 treatments. Deoxycholic acid is a molecule found naturally within the body that contributes to breaking down dietary fat.

How does Kybella work?

Kybella safely disrupts submental fat cells and dissolves them permanently by destroying the membrane of a fat cell. Any remaining pieces of disrupted fat cells are naturally absorbed by the body using normal metabolic pathways. When Kybella is injected into the excess fat, the deoxycholic acid destroys the fat cells within the area, making it impossible for fat to be stored there anymore.

What causes a double chin or a “turkey wattle”?

After age 35, the skin starts producing much less collagen and elastin — two chemicals that are necessary for providing support and firmness to skin. Other factors that cause a double chin to develop include weight fluctuations, genetics, and excessive exposure to sunlight. What happens during a Kybella treatment?

Before your treatment begins, numbing cream will be applied in the treatment area to keep you comfortable. The number of injections you’ll receive can vary between 10-30 per session, depending on the severity of your double chin. Some patients feel a mild burning sensation during treatment, but still find the procedure to be very tolerable. Afterward, a compression bandage may be used to help with healing, and your chin may feel a bit tender. You may need 2-4 treatments (spaced around one month apart). Each treatment takes approximately 20 minutes.

The swelling should hit its peak at 24 hours, and can last up to a few weeks. During recovery, you may also experience mild bruising, burning, or numbness.
