WHAT CAUSES ACNE?

Acne can develop for a number of reasons. It is caused when the tiny hair follicles in the skin are clogged by dead skin cells and sebum, the oily substance that lubricates the hair and skin. This leads to a buildup of bacteria, causing acne outbreaks.

Comedonal, or noninflammatory, acne

This form of acne is the mildest. It appears as whiteheads and blackheads over the affected skin.

Inflammatory acne

Inflammatory acne is more severe, including pink bumps across the skin and pustules, which are pink bumps with white pus.

Cystic acne

This is the most severe type of acne. It consists of large, painful, red bumps with or without pus that often result in scars on the skin.

What are Different Types of Acne Treatments?

BLU-U

BLU-U is a light treatment designed for mild to moderate forms of acne. It is a non-invasive treatment that uses a high-intensity blue light to kill acne-causing bacteria. The procedure is pain-free and can be completed in as little as 15 minutes.

Chemical Peels

A chemical peel provides deep exfoliation and removes layers of damaged skin. This allows for fresh, healthy skin cells to come to the surface. During this treatment, a solution containing alpha-hydroxy acids (fruit acids) or beta-hydroxy acids (salicylic acid) will be applied to your skin. Light, medium, and strong are the different levels of chemical peels you can receive.

Prescription Medications

We also offer a variety of topical and oral treatments for acne in San Diego. This can include antibiotics, retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, and salicylic acid.

Vibradermabrasion
