Medical uses for BOTOX

BOTOX is excellent for smoothing out wrinkles and delivering a more youthful appearance, but it also has some outstanding medical benefits as well, including the following:

Migraines

BOTOX can ward off chronic migraines and headaches before they begin. Each treatment involves about 30 injections with tiny needles, in the shallow muscles of seven key areas of the head and neck. BOTOX is able to block “pain transmitters”, thereby relieving the patient of discomfort.

Bruxism

Unconsciously grinding or clenching the teeth, either asleep or awake, is known as “bruxism”. This habit can cause severe dental problems (loss of tooth enamel, chipped or flattened teeth, tooth sensitivity, etc.) as well as earaches, headaches, facial pain, and migraines. It can also cause enlargement of the masseter muscles, affecting the appearance of the lower face.

BOTOX injections can control bruxism symptoms. Small doses injected directly into the masseter muscles weaken those muscles sufficiently to stop teeth grinding and jaw clenching from occurring. This treatment can help reduce wear and tear on the teeth and minimize temporomandibular joint (TMD/TMJ) damage.

Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) is a condition that is estimated to affect 4.8% of people. Just as BOTOX blocks the signals that cause wrinkles to form, it can also block “sweat messages” that go to your brain, helping those with chronic sweating problems. Many different areas can be treated, including the underarms, palms, and feet. These treatments can last 3-6 months.

Downtime and side effects

One thing that patients love most about BOTOX is that it demands no recovery time. Some patients do experience side effects such as headache, nausea, temporary eyelid drooping, and/or bruising and numbness at the injection sites, but these are very rare. If you’re worried about any of these side effects, please bring them up during your consultation.

Results

You will start noticing a difference in your facial muscles about 2-7 days after getting BOTOX injections, with the full effect taking up to two weeks. Results generally last 3-4 months. Some patients experience results even longer (4-6 months), while others see their results lasting closer to two months. It’s also important to note that first-time results tend to not last quite as long. Most patients prefer to have follow-up treatments every three or four months to maintain their results. Over time, the need to have lines and wrinkles routinely treated will diminish. In fact, some patients have BOTOX injections only once a year because they received it so regularly for awhile.
